Paper Products/Cardboard

Accepted Items

  • Paper products such as office paper, packaging, junk mail, cards, wrapping paper, magazines, catalogues, envelopes, (including window envelopes)
  • Books (remove and discard hard covers)
  • Shredded paper (packaged in clear plastic bag)
  • Cereal, cracker, detergent, tissue, shoe boxes, etc.  Remove & discard liners/plastic windows and flatten boxes.
  • Corrugated cardboard that is not contaminated with food, oil, paint, etc.  Flatten boxes to conserve space.  Staples/packing tape are ok.

Do NOT Include

  • No soiled paper or non-recyclable items such as paper plates , pizza boxes or Styrofoam
  • Metallic or plastic gift wrap, snack food backs, etc.

Tin Cans & Aluminum Foil

Accepted Items

  • All metal food cans are accepted - rinse & remove labels. Insert lids inside can and pinch can closed.
  • CLEAN aluminum pie plates & trays

Do NOT Include

  • Beverage containers that can be returned for deposit
  • No aerosol or paint cans
  • Other metal items, such as pots/pans, coat hangers, nails, wire, propane tanks, batteries, etc.
  • Paper backed foil, such as lids from take-out food
  • Foil laminates, such as potato chip bags

Plastic

Please bring recyclables to one of the four drop off depots that are located throughout the city.

Accepted Items

  • All types of clean household plastics, including plastic containers that once contained food, cleaners, bleach, shampoo, etc.
  • Include rigid plastics such as laundry baskets, buckets, flower pots, etc.
  • Plastic bags and film are also accepted. Must be contained in ONE bag.

Do NOT Include

  • Motor oil or chemical containers
  • Styrofoam

Preparation

  • Empty & rinse all containers. Remove & discard lids/sprayers.
  • OK to crush large containers to save space

Glass

Please bring recyclables to one of the four drop off depots that are located throughout the city.

Accepted Items

  • Only FOOD or BEVERAGE glass bottles & jars are accepted. Clear or coloured glass.

Do NOT Include

  • Any glass item that is not a food or beverage container, including window/mirror glass, drinking glasses or mugs, ceramics, cooking pots/pans/dishes, light bulbs, etc.
  • Beverage containers that can be returned for deposit.

Preparation

  • Rinse items thoroughly. Recycle metal lids separately; discard plastic lids.
  • Avoid breaking glass.

Automated Garbage Collection

One residential waste cart is provided at no charge and all household garbage must be set out in your cart. The cart serial number identifies it as belonging to your address, but it remains the property of the City. If you move, the cart must remain at the property.

Set Out Time

Must be at the curb/lane by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

Automated Garbage Collection

Position your Residential Waste Cart, with the arrows facing the street/alley and 3ft (1m) of clearance around the cart in such a manner that automated collection may occur without collectors being required to manually move the cart. In addition:

  • do not overload the cart (limits as per the maximum load rating)
  • all waste must fit into the cart and the lid must close completely; no material placed on top or outside of the cart will be collected
  • do not place hot ashes, flammable liquids, oil or grease, construction debris, auto parts, dirt or rocks in the cart

Appliances & Metal Items

Tip: The best way to get rid of an appliance is to ask the retailer to take the old one when they deliver a new one.

Disposal Instructions

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers must have the Freon removed by an authorized local appliance dealer who will then attach a sticker that allows the item to be dropped off.

Properly tagged appliances and other metal items such as stoves, microwave ovens, hot water tanks, swing sets, metal storage sheds, bicycles, and BBQ's must be taken to the Medicine Hat Regional Landfill on Highway 41A.

Automotive Tires

Drop Off Instructions

A maximum of 4 automobile/light truck tires can be disposed of at the Medicine Hat Regional Landfill on Highway 41A. For disposal of other tires, contact the Landfill Office at (403) 527-1718 or email eu@medicinehat.ca for details.

Christmas Trees

The City offers a recycling program for Christmas trees that residents are encouraged to use.

Tree Drop Off Instructions

From December 26th to January 31st each year Christmas trees are accepted 24/7 in designated areas at the Kipling Street and Shamrock Recycling Depot locations. The compost facility at the Medicine Hat Regional Landfill on Highway 41A also accepts Christmas trees, free of charge. Trees are composted, so they must be free of all decorations and plastic bags must be removed. This means removing all lights, tinsel, garland, plastic wrap, tree stands, wire, rope, nails and all other foreign materials.

Yard Waste

Medicine Hat residents have the option of subscribing for seasonal yard waste collection using a convenient 95-gallon (360-litre) Automated Yard Waste Cart that is specifically designed and vented for yard waste material.

Set Out Time

Must be at the curb/lane by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

To Subscribe For This Service

Residents must sign up for curbside yard waste automated collection at Customer Service in City Hall. All applications are subject to a one time level of service change fee of $50.00.

Automated Collection Requirements

Position your green yard waste cart next to your waste cart, leaving a distance of 3' (1m) between them. The arrows on the cart must be pointed toward the street/ally.

DO NOT USE plastic bags. Place yard waste directly into the yard waste cart. All material must fit into the cart and the lid must close completely; nothing placed on top or outside of the cart will be collected.

Accepted Materials

Acceptable yard waste material includes:

  • grass clippings
  • leaves
  • prunings
  • plant trimmings
  • cut flowers
  • twigs, branches and limbs - maximum size is 2" (5 cm) in diameter and 3' (1m) in length

Sure Grow Compost

Each spring the Solid Waste Utility has bags of finished yard waste compost (Sure Grow) for sale, while quantities last.

Sure Grow, made entirely from yard waste materials such as grass clippings, leaves, and tree & shrub trimmings, is a class A compost that greatly enhances overall soil structure and improves movement of air and water within the soil. Plants grown in soil amended with compost tend to be healthier, require less watering, and are more disease and pest resistant.

Please note that bulging or leaking paint cans, products not in their original container and unidentifiable material may not be accepted. Accepted container size is 100 ml to 23 litres. Empty metal paint cans and pails can be deposited with metals.

Used Sharps

A 'sharp' is any object that can pierce, puncture or cut the skin. Lancets, pen needles, syringes, knives, scalpels, razors, scissors or broken glass are all examples of sharps.

Disposal Instructions

Used sharps should always be placed in an approved sharps container, never in with your garbage or recycling. Several area pharmacies provide syringe containers free of charge, and will accept the filled containers back for safe disposal.

Safe Handling Requirements

When preparing Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) materials for drop-off, please remember the following:

  • All materials must be in clearly-labelled, sealed containers (containers will not be returned);
  • Do not mix different products together;
  • Each container can be no larger than 23 litres in quantity;
  • The maximum quantity accepted is 50 litres of material in total; and
  • Empty containers are not accepted, except for oil containers

Household Hazardous Waste is forwarded for safe disposal to a specially designed hazardous waste landfill or may be destroyed in a hazardous waste incinerator.
